Melon or watermelon: comparison, recommendations for use

In the hot summertime, melons and watermelons appear on the tables. These juicy fruits with their soft sweetness and juiciness are able to cool and refresh in a hot minute. But when it comes to choosing between these two melons and watermelons, a lot of questions start to arise.

Similarities and differences

Melon and watermelon are about 90% water (watermelon contains slightly more water than melon). Both fruits are low in calories.

Both melon and watermelon are rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and fiber. A melon contains two and a half times more fiber than a watermelon.

Watermelon contains a valuable antioxidant – lycopene, while melon contains about four times more vitamin C.

How to use correctly?

Moderation should be observed. The optimal amount for consumption at a time is no more than 200 g. Exceeding this norm can cause unpleasant consequences: watermelon has a diuretic effect, and melon can cause a laxative effect.

How to apply?

Rinse the melon or watermelon thoroughly beforehand. After cutting, store them in the refrigerator for no more than a day.

Combination with other foods

Avoid combining melon or watermelon with:

  • sour vegetables and fruits;
  • pickled products;
  • legumes;
  • cereals;
  • potatoes;
  • meat;
  • fish;
  • eggs;
  • milk;
  • salted cheese;
  • bread;
  • baking;
  • soda;
  • kvass and beer.

If the digestive system is in order, you can make exceptions to the rules. For example, gourmets can make a salad with watermelon and feta cheese, a smoothie of melon and grapefruit, or a combination of melon and jamon.

The best way to enjoy watermelon or melon is by adding them to your diet as a snack. Both fruits are quickly digested: watermelon in 20 minutes, melon in 30 minutes.
