Officials at Australia’s Monash University (Melbourne) concluded that a glass of beer or wine a day can protect against cardiovascular disease.
Scientists monitored 18,000 people aged 70 and over in the United States and Australia. Researchers found that drinking five to ten glasses of alcohol a week led to a much lower risk of death from heart problems.
57% of the participants in the experiment were women and 43% were men. Most of them were around 70 years old. The experiment was conducted for about 4.7 years. The researchers found that moderate drinkers fared better than their peers.

“It’s the range of five to 10 standard drinks per week where we’ve seen real benefits in reducing the risk of death as well as cardiovascular disease. We can say with great confidence that moderate alcohol consumption does not appear to harm older adults in terms of cardiovascular disease and overall mortality,” Robin Woods, an associate professor in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, told the publication.
However, people should not use the results of this study as encouragement for excessive alcohol consumption, which increases the risk of cancer, heart disease, dementia, stroke and liver failure, the source noted.
